Despite its grim and grey aesthetic, the Lands Between has proved to be an oddly colourful place in Elden Ring. With an expansive lore written by George R.R. Martin, the game's epic runtime means you'll meet plenty of demigods and monsters during your Elden Ring playthrough.
Part of Elden Ring's charm has always been its rich tapestry of NPCs, with the likes of the Turtle Pope, Iron Fist Alexander, and the fan-favourite Patches giving you plenty to do when you aren't trying to defeat the various Shardbearers. Character customisation is also a big part of the game, but it turns out, not everyone wants to add Samuel L. Jackson or Shrek to the Lands Between.
Who Is Johnny Default?
Elden Ring's character customiser was originally written off as being nightmarish when it was leaked ahead of its full reveal. However, as we've got used to its impressive array of options, we've been able to let our imaginations run wild. This writer even transformed their Tarnished into Darth Mauls from Star Wars. On the other end of the spectrum, we have the bog-standard Johnny Default.
After looking into the character customisation video of noted Elden Ring dataminer Zullie the Witch, redditor u/gumojo figured out that the most common setting across the board is 128. Noticing the pattern, the OP went into the character creator and put every slider at 128. The result is the uber-generic Johnny Default.
This grey ghoul reminds us a lot of the Engineers from Ridley Scott's Prometheus and Alien Covenant, and safe to say, grey is the theme of the day. As well as Scott's Engineers, others claimed he looks like Brent Spiner's Data from Star Trek: The Next Generation. Responding to Johnny Default, one fan wrote, "Bring me the most average man you have. No that's too average," while another added, "Woah, it's John EldenRing." A third simply wrote, "Ash, of War."
Johnny Default Is Actually John Darksoul
For those who are regulars of the Souls-like genre, you'll know Johnny Default is actually a deep cut to the John Darksoul meme. The idea is that John Darksoul is the name given to any generic protagonist you can customise in a AAA game. The John Darksoul copypasta was born and the character was added to canon. Now, it seems John Elden Ring is here to take his crown.
Sure, customising a character to look like your favourite pop culture icon might seem like a minor part of a game, but for those that wanted to add their own horror-themed Sonic the Hedgehog to Elden Ring, it's much better than some bland hero cutting around the Lands Between. Now you know how to create Johnny Default, why not add him to your own game?
