So you like Marvel games, eh? Well, have all the Marvel games in the world. While the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to stay strong on the silver screen, things are also ticking along nicely for video games based on those spandex-clad supes. Now, a rumour that's been blowing in the wind for a while could be suiting up once again. That's right, the Iron Man video game is back.
Following the release of Insomniac's Spider-Man in 2018, we've had a deluge of some great (and not-so-great) games based on the world of Marvel Comics. Alongside Marvel's Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy, we've also got upcoming releases for Midnight Suns, Spider-Man 2, Wolverine, and a rumoured Black Panther game. Why not chuck another into the mix?
What's The Iron Man Game Rumour?
You might remember the recent rumours that EA was working on multiple Marvel games. We can throw the floodgates open to speculation later, but it looks increasingly likely that one of these is a supposed Black Panther outing where you become the new saviour of Wakanda. As for Tony Stark blasting off in his armour, this update comes courtesy of noted leaker Tom Henderson.
While Henderson has made his name giving the scoop on Call of Duty, he's since branched out into the wider gaming sphere. Although he's marking this one with a big ol' maybe, he claims to have heard about a mythical Iron Man game. There are no further details on who could develop the game for EA, when it might release, or any other story details. Sorry Tom, something smells a little fishy here.
Personally, we think the timing would be odd for an Iron Man game. With Black Panther 2: Wakanda Forever coming to cinemas - and the "new" Black Panther destined to be a part of the MCU's future - it makes sense to take us to Wakanda. Iron Man was a major casualty of Avengers: Endgame, and with Robert Downey Jr. seemingly having hung up his suit, there's nothing to capitalise on here. Also, Iron Man isn't exactly the most exciting Marvel hero, which is similar to why DC fans think a Superman game is so hard to nail.
Fans React To Iron Man Game
If EA is building its own gaming universe, it would definitely be a divisive decision. Yes, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order was a masterpiece, but the publisher is known for its greed. Responding to Henderson's post, one critic wrote, "Dudeee an Iron man game with that + an open world like Arkham City or SpiderMan + a good story…oh boi that's the dream…but its EA…so we will see :’)" Another added, "Why would anybody even be interested in any @EA game? Forgot BF2042, F1, Fifa, etc."
A third cheered, "They really need to license all superhero games to @insomniacgames because literally no one does it better than they do." And we've got to agree. We've already covered the dream games Insomniac should develop and how it could build a Marvel Gaming Universe as its very own Kevin Feige of the superhero game genre. For the time being, the Avengers remain disassembled, and it looks like the IPs will remain scattered among the great and the good of gaming.
