For the first time in the Call of Duty series, the step-by-step campaign is set to be scrapped in favour of an open-world experience, where players will be allowed to roam freely throughout a large-scale map as the linear quests guide them towards increasingly violent warfare.
The Black Ops Gulf War title is reportedly adopting an open-world Campaign, as the Cold War sequel edges nearer to its completion, four years in the making.
So, ahead of its airing this October, leakers have now revealed what appears to be the Gulf War campaign map.
Leakers claim to reveal first look at Black Ops Gulf War Campaign map
Popular leaker "Fumo Leaks" took to Twitter to release early overhead images of a Gulf War map, first insinuating that its size would result in it being used for Zombies.
However, after the report of the open-world map, the leaker said, "THIS AINT ZOMBIES. WELCOME TO THE CAMPAIGN MAP".
The released images show one rather standard biome, heavily dense in green wasteland, mountains, and forests, with a handful of roads, rivers, and buildings splitting up POIs.
Although the images only show basic layouts, it does appear that the map will be huge, almost to the scale of a battle royale map, if not bigger.
How big will the Black Ops Gulf War Campaign map be?
The original report from Insider Gaming claimed that the open-world map is to be "built from the ground up" rather than "reused assets" like the Open Combat missions in Modern Warfare 3.
Features such as "fast travel" are also reportedly in the works, meaning that the landscape must be big enough for the standard vehicular movement to be too slow to suit the pace of the campaign, which would suggest it might be a similar size to those deployed in Warzone.
Some fans also noted that the Gulf War was mainly fought in desert-like countries, meaning that the leaked pictures might only be small snippets of the map too, should Call of Duty try to stick close to the source material.
The Campaign will likely be the first game mode to be revealed and playable, with Raven Software hopeful to allow their work to compliment Treyarch's overall game.
