LEGO is once again proving that life can sometimes be plastic AND fantastic, as its next big gaming crossover has been officially revealed. Video games and LEGO go hand in hand, and while Mario sets are nothing new, we've more recently seen the Danish toy giant embrace other IPs.

From Sonic the Hedgehog to Horizon, we've also got Fortnite and The Legend of Zelda to satisfy our urge to splash our cash on those plastic bricks. Now, an official Mario Kart set looks destined to race into our lives and bankrupt us all over again.

Mario Kart LEGO is the next big gaming crossover

Jay's Brick Blog shared news of the Mario Kart LEGO set, reportedly coming on January 1, 2025, and looking like a great way to spend your Christmas money. Revealed at Gamescom, there are six new LEGO Mario Kart sets that boast fan favourites, including Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Toad, Baby Mario, Baby Luigi, and Baby Peach.

After being teased as part of March's MAR10 Day celebration in March, we've got our first proper look at the sets. According to Jay Ong, the new sets are as follows:

  • 72031 Super Mario™: Mario Kart™ – Yoshi Bike – US$14.99 / €14,99 / £12,99
  • 72032 Super Mario™: Mario Kart™ – Standard Kart – US$19.99 / €19,99 / £17,99
  • 72033 Super Mario™: Mario Kart™ – Donkey Kong & DK Jumbo – US$34.99 / €34,99 / £29,99
  • 72034 Super Mario™: Mario Kart™ – Baby Mario vs. Baby Luigi – US$29.99 / €29,99 / £24,99
  • 72035 Super Mario™: Mario Kart™ – Toad’s Garage – US$39.99 / €39,99/ / £34,99
  • 72036 Super Mario™: Mario Kart™ – Baby Peach & Grand Prix Set – US$79.99 / £69,99 / €79,99

As is becoming increasingly common with modern LEGO sets, the site reports that you'll be able to add LEGO Mario, Luigi, and Peach figures (although not included) to your Mario Kart sets for an interactive experience. We're told that using these will add Mario Kart audio and visual effects like horn-honking and kart-drifting.

These characters can also be used to scan Item Boxes and collect extra coins to boost your final score as you finish the race. While it's disappointing that we aren't getting a specific Mario Kart-inspired Mario minifig, the little racing Toad is adorable and will be going straight on our shelves.
