Media Molecule, the creators of the character Sackboy and games like Dreams and LittleBigPlanet is reportedly planning to lay off off nearly 20% of its staff force.

As the gaming industry appears to be in free-fall in terms of staffing, Media Molecule could be the latest company to let go of its employees.

The UK-based company, which was bought by Sony back in 2010, is reportedly capping its workforce at 115 members, which will see the 135-person-strong team be cut by nearly 20%.

Media Molecule reportedly hit with mass layoffs

According to GLHF, Media Molecule has informed staff on October 24 that roughly 20 employees will be losing their jobs, as the company works towards the 115 staff-member target. This comes in the wake of Media Molecule stopping its support for Dreams in September 2023.

Media Molecules is working on a new game, although the details of its upcoming title are scarce. There are hopes that MM will eventually hire back staff, but it might've made this move amidst fears of a recession.

Media Molecule's layoff continues UK gaming spiral

The news of Media Molecule's staff layoffs comes in the wake of one of Sony's best-ever days of selling. Insomniac Games' Marvel's Spider-Man 2 became the fastest-selling first-person launch in PlayStation history, netting over 2.5 million copies in 24 hours.

GLHF also reported other UK-based studios are undoing layoffs, too. Independent companies Frontier (creators of Planet Zoo) and Creative Assembly (a Sega subsidiary that was creating HYENAS before its cancellation)

The gaming industry has recently seen an abundance of layoffs, with even Goliaths like Epic Games, Activision, and Naughty Dog being amongst the most high-profile companies to cut down on their workforces.

What this means for Media Molecule's future is yet to be known, with only slithers of information being available about its unnamed upcoming game.
