Live-action Minecraft movie is in danger of being the next Borderlands
It suddenly feels like we're back in the mid-noughties, as the curse of the video game movie seems like it's upon us all over again. While we had a good run with the likes of Detective Pikachu, Sonic the Hedgehog, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, that ever-present curse is rearing its head once again.
For now, it seems like the small screen is the best place for video game adaptation, with HBO and Amazon still riding high on the critical acclaim of The Last of Us and Fallout. We can barely keep track of every new series and movie coming out, but unfortunately for one gaming giant, it ain't looking pretty.
Live-action Minecraft movie gets a frosty reception
Although we're far from Uwe Boll levels of abysmal adaptations, Tinsel Town has been stung by Eli Roth's live-action Borderlands. Gearbox's beloved looter series has been chewed up and spat out, making just over $30 million against a budget of up to $120 million. As well as being a box office bomb, it's already regarded as one of the worst adaptations ever.
We've only got a trailer for Jared Hess' long-awaited Minecraft movie, and at first glance, we're worried it'll be the next Borderlands. Despite boasting an all-star cast of Jack Black and Jason Momoa, could this really be Jack's second big video game flop following Borderlands?
At the time of writing, the Minecraft movie trailer has an overwhelming 926k dislikes on YouTube - compared to just 525k likes. The comments make for some pretty grim reading, and away from people simply not understanding who the movie is aimed at, there are all the typical complaints that Warner Bros. has gone 'woke.'
Among the more 'normal' comments, one sceptic wrote, "This looks like a parody skit you'd see in 2015," while another added, "Who ever agreed to make this a live action movie. Your days are numbered." A third joked, "Why does Jason Momoa look like someone ordered him on Temu?"
On the more serious side, there was an uncomfortable narrative about Orange is the New Black's Danielle Brooks starring as Dawn. It really seems that in 2024, moviegoers have a problem with a black woman being part of an ensemble. Some of these might be for internet clout, but others seem to be genuinely rattled by Brooks' inclusion.
More than complaints about a diverse cast, it's simply a case that the Minecraft movie doesn't look that great. As well as calling out the childish humour, others have said that Black is simply playing the same kind of role he has in the likes of Jumanji and Borderlands.
The jury is still out on the Minecraft movie, and with us being pleasantly surprised by The Super Mario Bros. Movie, we'll remain open-minded. Still, we're not convinced this is going to be an Academy Award contender in 2025.
