Some eight years after Mafia III, the latest instalment in the series is finally on the way. Mafia: The Old Country has been revealed at Gamescom's Open Night Live Showcase, giving us another crime caper for the ages.

The next chapter in the long-running Mafia series will be developed by Hangar 13, the team that worked on the third title in the original trilogy and the three expansion DLCs that came with it.

Mafia: The Old Country announced by Hangar 13

As a curtain closed on Gamescom's Open Night Live, Mafia: The Old Country has been officially revealed, with a brief scan of a mob leader's house overlooking Sicily.

The fourth instalment of the franchise follows the remastered trilogy which was released in 2020, although the developers (and title name) suggest that it could be a series reboot that heads back to the earliest stages of the Mafia.

"A thrilling story set in 1900s Sicily, during the origins of the Mafia," said Nick Baynes, President of Hangar 13, during the showcase.

"We're going back to the roots of what people love about the Mafia franchise, crafting a deep linear narrative, with that classic mob movie feeling."

"Mafia's success is built on our players' passion for the franchise, and we're so proud to return to Mafia with The Old Country."

Mafia: The Old Country will be revealed in more detail in December 2024, although a release date (or window) is still up in the air.

Mafia games have received polarising feedback in the past, but will it be fourth time lucky? The first title notched up an impressive 88/100 score on Metacritic for PC (although its console ports couldn't translate), while the second and third instalments were perceived as good but not groundbreaking titles.

Hangar 13 will now be looking to recapture the original essence of the Mafia name after more than eight years without a mainline game.
