We like to think that the console wars are done with, but sadly, they're still here - just in a different shape.
What used to be a battlefield that saw gamers locking horns to argue which console was best to play the same games, is now a board room of executives figuring out how to topple each other while putting on a front of camaraderie.
The ongoing feud around Xbox's Activision Blizzard deal has revealed the worst in all three of the gaming titans, Xbox, Sony, and Nintendo. Even as they make their alliances, it's clear that they're all still… pretty childish. And in a bizarre turn, Xbox is being nice about PlayStation, but at the cost of itself.
Xbox admits Sony is dominating sales
Chin up, Xbox.
Microsoft is clearly keen to do anything to ensure that their deal with Activision Blizzard goes through, with the fight to see the company join forces with Xbox stunted at nearly every turn - and it looks like the gaming giant is willing to dob itself in a bit.
As reported by GamesIndustry.biz, it looks as though Microsoft president Brad Smith has claimed that PlayStation has the market cornered already. Smith refers to the sales numbers that Sony has been enjoying in comparison to Xbox's - which is considerably lower.
Think about the market in Europe," he says. "It is a market where Sony has an 80% share. Globally, it is about 70/30. In Japan, it is 96/4. These numbers have been remarkably steady for two decades. Even last year, when there were issues with Sony's supply chain, they came back strong."
Microsoft admits PlayStation has better exclusives
This admission from Microsoft's President comes after another pretty big compliment to PlayStation from last year, when the company told the Competition and Markets Authority that "Sony has more exclusive games than Microsoft, many of which are better quality." Blimey.
This is a big revelation to come from Microsoft, as it's incredibly precious about the quality of Halo and Forza - but it looks like not even Xbox can deny that PlayStation has some serious bangers. Quite right, too.
We've known for a while that Microsoft always makes a loss on Xbox models, and with Sony apparently dominating the market, we're not surprised the green camp is trying to push through the ABK deal as soon as possible.
