It's fair to say that Halo Infinite was a bit of a disaster for Microsoft, and it looked like the futuristic warfare franchise might have been in free fall.

Despite a mass exodus of layoffs at the Halo studios from 343 Industries, Infinite has stabilised somewhat and keeps an avid fanbase - albeit significantly lower than what could have been achieved with a strong launch).

Following Infinite's new-found bedrock, it looks like Halo is still a promising franchise for Microsoft. It now appears that a Halo: Combat Evolved remaster could be in the works.

Microsoft reportedly developing Halo: Combat Evolved remaster

As per a report from The Verge, Microsoft is reportedly making a Halo: Combat Evolved remaster, polishing Bungie's 2001 title with a modern-day glow-up.

Halo: Combat Evolved was one of the franchise's best-ever games, scoring an incredible 97% acclaim on Metacritic, as it launched alongside the original Xbox and carried the new console on its shoulders for some time.

The Verge's Tom Warren claims that a remaster is in its "early stages," which suggests it's still a way off. It seems unlikely that the Halo: Combat Evolved remaster will be announced officially during the Xbox Games Showcase on June 9, but Warren claims the title is already under development.

PlayStation could release for Halo: Combat Evolved remaster

In Warren's report, he goes on to add that Microsoft is also "considering" releasing the Halo: Combat Evolved remaster on PlayStation.

He lists the game among a number of other options that Microsoft could open up to PS5, which doesn't confirm the intentions for Combat Evolved. Still, it could be an indicator that the publisher is continuing to mend its relationship with Sony.

The next question is Game Pass?  Off the back of Black Ops 6 landing on the service, when Combat Evolved rolls around, it's a strong possibility for Halo to follow suit.

Halo: Combat Evolved will go down as one of the best FPS titles of all time, and given Halo's latest fumbles, it will be interesting to see if Microsoft can honour its legacy.
