Rare
Though the exclusive market is running a little dry for Xbox right now - even with Redfall barrelling over the horizon - there are a few games standing tall on the wishlist for Microsoft fans. Contraband still has plenty to reveal, while there are reboots on the slate - including Perfect Dark.
The return of Rare's shooter title has been long-awaited, especially as it's been quiet for so long. Although word of the reboot from The Initiative has zapped excitement into old-school players, there might be less to the game than we expected.
The rebooted Perfect Dark could be a remake
Definitely proving itself to be a drastically different product from the one we expected, there is a new rumour that the Perfect Dark reboot from Xbox is actually a remake of 2000's first-person shooter rather than a new chapter to the series.
As pointed out by user brokenswiftie on ResetEra, the LinkedIn profile of Tyler Thornock makes for some interesting reading. Thornick is the technical animator for a series of projects, whose profile lists the items he's worked on - including "Perfect Dark (remake)."
It could simply be a mislabelling of the game, or it could be an entirely different project. Still, there's every chance that the new Perfect Dark game isn't exactly what it seems. A remake is obviously welcome, but in substitute of an expected sequel, it wouldn't be quite as exciting as we once thought.
We've already had a Perfect Dark remaster
If these rumblings turn out to be true, it'll sting even more, as we've actually seen a revitalised version of the game before. Perfect Dark got a remaster back in 2010, and though it isn't a total remake, it's still an example of the game coming back.
Considering The Initiative has hyped itself as the first AAAA studio, we had high hopes that Perfect Dark could get the same treatment that Crystal Dynamics gave Tomb Raider in 2013. We're not against remakes, and as Capcom's new-gen Resident Evil 4 remake proved, they can be big business.
If another Perfect Dark remake is coming back again in place of the reboot we thought we were getting, then there are sure to be some angry fans. Come on gaming industry, could we have a new game just this once?
