Modders make GTA 6 wait easier with 'true' Vice City remaster

Doing what Rockstar Games couldn't, a group of modders have created a 'true' Vice City remaster, revamping the 2022 title for new-gen systems.

Do you remember the hype when the GTA Trilogy was announced? Although the surprise was (typically) spoiled ahead of time, we were still pumped to learn that Rockstar Games was officially rereleasing souped-up versions of 2001's GTA III, 2002's Vice City, and 2004's San Andreas.

Sadly, with work being handed over to Grove Street Games and the main branch of Rockstar presumably busy on GTA 6 or milking GTA V for all it's worth, things quickly went wrong. Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition debuted to a slew of negativity in 2021, and was so bad that Rockstar was even asked for refunds

Fanmade GTA: Vice City remaster looks like the real deal

Worse than the GTA Trilogy being a disaster on its own, there are reports its critical and commercial panning led to GTA IV and Red Dead Redemption remasters being canned, as well as a return to the Bully series being put back in development hell. Having had enough of Rockstar, a group of gamers have taken matters into their own hands.

A modding team called Revolution Team has released a trailer for its GTA: Vice City remaster. Remastered with GTA V's Rage Engine, it's another full conversion but offers something more. Alongside all of the original missions, there are hopes for improved textures, mechanics, and animation.

The description explains how the GTA Trilogy used Unreal Engine for rendering, while the game's physics used the outdated RenderWare from over 20 years ago. The plan is to "collect the best" from previous versions of Vice City and bundle them together for GTA Vice City Nextgen Edition.

The team says, "Our priority task is to transfer the original missions and make sure that the familiar Vice City will sparkle with new colors and fans of the game will have the opportunity to re-immerse themselves in the familiar world and plot, but at the same time experience new emotions from playing their favorite game."

GTA 6 is taking us back to Vice City

GTA 6 trailer Vice City sign

While it's been 22 real-world years since we first stepped foot in Vice City, it's been decades in the GTA timeline. We left Tommy Vercetti's neon-splashed adventure in 1986, and while GTA 6's exact setting is unknown, it looks very likely to be set in a present-day Vice City.

It was undoubtedly our love of this fictional Miami that tempted Rockatar to revisit the locale for GTA 6, which makes the lacklustre GTA Trilogy port of Vice City even more disappointing. It's doubtful that Rockstar will touch the 2002 game for a while, so what better way to experience Vice City ahead of GTA 6 than via a true and loving remake?
