After just one week, the classic Modern Warfare 2 title has been betrayed by Shepherd's evil smile again, as the multiplayer servers have been temporarily shut down.

Modern Warfare 2 (2009) has proved as one of the most popular landing spots for players jumping on classic Call of Duty games, as Microsoft re-launched the servers and offered developmental support.

But now the servers have been EMP'd and Call of Duty has confirmed that multiplayer has been shut down again on Steam.

Modern Warfare 2 breaks on Steam

Thousands of players have been jumping back on the classic Call of Duty games after Microsoft fixed the Xbox 360 games, with more gamers being housed on Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops 2 than on Halo Infinite.

However, players have reported that the multiplayer servers aren't working on PC, even though they should be, with Steam users constantly being unable to connect.

Call of Duty has now acknowledged this, taking to their CoDUpdates Twitter account to reveal that they are shutting down the servers while they investigate the issues.

Call of Duty promises Modern Warfare 2 fixes

The Call of Duty account confirmed that multiplayer is down for Modern Warfare 2 while the developers probe into the issues, although modes like Campaign are still playable.

Many players have applauded Infinity Ward for taking this action, given that they didn't expect much support for these games given their rush to get Modern Warfare 3 out.

"The fact that an 11-year-old game is being acknowledged is CRAZY! dream come true," said one fan.

The servers have now been down since July 26 (9pm BST), and the CoDUpdates page will likely update fans when the fix is live.
