The beta for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has clearly been a big success for Infinity Ward. Though we've seen beta testing before with Call of Duty, recent years have seen the franchise's betas become a crucial part of testing in the multiplayer department.
It's nice that developers put their trust in players to help them create the games that those very fans want to see, and there's something unashamedly sincere about a game of Modern Warfare 2's scale bearing its problems to the world. This has proven to be a pretty great system, as the beta for Modern Warfare 2 has broken plenty of Call of Duty records.
Modern Warfare 2's Beta Is The Biggest In CoD History
Activision has come forward to announce that the recent beta of Modern Warfare 2 was the biggest in the history of the Call of Duty franchise. Not bad, considering it was plagued with allegations of discrimination and ridiculous stealth field upgrades that told people where you are.
We didn't get any specific statistics, but the latest blog post on the Call of Duty website revealed just how big the beta was. "The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II beta concluded yesterday, and it was one for the record books," reads the blog. "Call of Duty players made the Modern Warfare II Open Beta the biggest Beta in Call of Duty history -- the most players, most hours played, and most matches played across PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X|S, and PC platforms combined. Thank you, Call of Duty community!"
If you look at the responses online, not everyone agrees. Responding to the news, one critic wrote, "But it was the worst beta experience ever, while another added, "Which naturally means most feedback received of all time...yet they want to ingore it... What is happening .." A third concluded, "This COD beta felt different with the community. I've seen it divided before but never on this level."
Players Can Still Get More MWII Early Access
Though the end of the open beta indicates to many players that this is all they'll get to play from Modern Warfare 2 until the game officially launches, it's not necessarily the case. It might not be exactly the same, but if you're willing to pre-order the game digitally, you'll be able to play the game's campaign a week before launch - meaning you can get to grinding Modern Warfare 2 on October 20.
2022's mainline Call of Duty is set to be a pretty big deal and has a lot riding on it. After complaints about last year's Vanguard, Infinity Ward is going all-in on a more unified CoDverse with Warzone 2 also in tow. Modern Warfare 2 definitely has the potential to be the biggest title that Call of Duty has created yet, but we'll have to wait and see. One thing's certain... things are pretty sweaty at Infinity Ward HQ right now.
