It's out with the old, in with the *erm* older, as Infinity Ward makes its move on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. The confusingly named game is 2022's entry to the always-growing Call of Duty franchise, and serves as a sequel to 2019's lauded Modern Warfare.
These days, there are accusations that Call of Duty simply relies on rehashing old formulas with a slight twist. This was evident with last year's Call of Duty: Vanguard being branded just another World War II shooter. So, it probably won't help a revamp of the old Modern Warfare franchise to chuck in a load of remastered maps.
How Many Remastered Maps Will Modern Warfare 2 Have?
We're still months away from Modern Warfare 2, but with an expected autumn release, expect leakers, dataminers, and general rumour merchants to start revealing what Infinity Ward is working on behind the scenes. Now, we're told there will be a tonne of remastered maps for those of you who miss the good ol' days.
Trusted leaker RalphsValve has dropped a potentially major bombshell that Modern Warfare 2 will have a DLC roadmap spreading into 2023. The DLC will specifically cover remastered maps from titles including Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007), the OG Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009), and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2011).
Although they didn't give a definitive list of what will be included, you can bet some firm favourites like Highrise, Shoothouse, and Crash could be making an appearance. Even though we had Shipment in Vanguard, some would be fine with another new version appearing for Modern Warfare 2... or whatever it's called. Ralph has a sometimes questionable relationship with leaks, so we'll have to wait and see whether this is Infinity Ward's plan of action.
Is Modern Warfare 2 Just A Remastered Call Of Duty?
It's no secret that Call of Duty is in a state of flux right now. Alongside Vanguard complaints, a constantly bugged Warzone, and that whole Activision Blizzard scandal, the franchise looked like it was in trouble. That was before Microsoft swooped in and bought the publisher. Since then, there have been promises of change, or even the idea Call of Duty will ditch the saturation of yearly releases.
In response to the rumoured remastered DLC, one gamer grumbled, "Cod goes off of recycled content now." However, someone else simply added, "Yet you’ll still buy it." Others have suggested that this is a wise course of action - giving us new content while reducing the chance the game arrives on hard drives a buggy mess. At least a remastered DLC should have a solid foundation to work off. If we aren't getting a mainline Call of Duty game next year, a remastered map DLC would be one way to fill the gap, but then again, it would undoubtedly rattle angry haters.
