Modern Warfare 2019 nearly had Infinite Warfare 2 Zombies

Modern Warfare 2019 nearly had a Zombies game mode continuing on from Infinite Warfare.

Well, well, well, talk about dodging a bullet.

That's the name of the game for Call of Duty, but it seems like the developers dodged a bloody missile, as the infamously trashed Infinite Warfare Zombies experience was set to be included in Modern Warfare 2019.

Just as Modern Warfare 3 looks to be bringing Zombies to the Infinity Ward series for the first time, former Call of Duty devs have now teased that they nearly arrived five years ago to start the trilogy off.

Ex-Call of Duty dev claims Infinite Zombies was set for revival in Modern Warfare 2019

Infinite Warfare Zombies was the only attempt that we saw Infinity Ward take at bringing the undead to their series, with Treyarch exclusively parading the limb-eaters in the Call of Duty franchise until then.ย

But according to former Infinity Ward developer Lee Ross, Modern Warfare's reboot in 2019 could have had the game mode too, as he claimed that there was set to be a "continuation" of IW Zombies, which was ultimately canned for "realism".

"The continuation was going to be HUGE but it got sidelined due to the realism focus for the next game," he said in a post on Twitter (X).

"I fought that change hard and ended up leaving IW partly to that," Ross added.

Would Infinite Warfare Zombies have worked in Modern Warfare 2019?

What's quite strange is that Infinite Warfare Zombies nearly didn't exist either, as the futuristic title was supposed to have been an alien-centric mode named "Extinction 2" - the sequel to Ghosts' namesake mode.

Nonetheless, the ex-Infinity Ward devs are continuing to defend the project, and have now claimed that it would have been "Huge", just like how Treyarch developed on their original map, Nacht der Untoten.

"Keep in mind, we got it right on our first attempt at Zombies. Treyarch had been up to bat many, many times before it was what it was by the time they launched BO3," Ross said in a different tweet.

Ultimately, this might have paved the way for Warzone, which ended up being the additional game modes alongside Campaign and Spec Ops, and I know what I'd have preferred...
