Modern Warfare 3's ‘axed’ PvPvE Zombies mode leaves a sour taste

Instead, we got that 'dead' Zombies mode.

Modern Warfare Zombies

While Modern Warfare 3 uprooted the fallen veterans of Urzikstan to form an army of the dead in the style of the Night King, it looks like the undead actually got the better of us for the first time in Call of Duty history. The legacy of Modern Warfare 3 Zombies was completely chewed up after its first season.

Treyarch pulled away from the mode to focus on Black Ops 6, and the rot set in. But it wasn't always supposed to be this way, and as reports suggest that a PvPvE twist was supposed to happen, its cancellation has left sour flesh in the mouths of the zombies and their fans.

Modern Warfare reportedly axed a PvPvE Zombies mode

According to the popular social media fan account "MargwaNetwork", Modern Warfare Zombies had prepared a DMZ-like PvPvE mode, where players would fight to keep the undead at bay while also avoiding fire from enemy forces and completing contracts.

Players would still have to exfiltrate from the area, similar to in normal Zombies. The circle would push players into hotter territory, and they would need to fend off enemy squads to escape with their kit.

The mode was reported to be a post-launch addition but was 'cut' from the seasonal content and left to be nothing but a dust collector in the archives. Still, players have expressed their displeasure, knowing just how MW Zombies was left to be overrun by the apocalyptic beasts.

"That's the weirdest thing in the MWZ development circle. Also because it seems that they've been working on that until S4 or something like that," one fan stressed. "It’s funny cause they had mw2 and 3 to do it," added another.

While the accuracy of the 'leak' has been questioned, it's clear to see that there was so much untapped potential in Modern Warfare 3 Zombies that never saw the light of day. It's all going to get brushed under the carpet when Black Ops 6 blows Zombies out of the water - literally with that Kraken arm in Terminus - but MW3's disregard and abandonment shouldn't be forgotten.
