We've got Call of Duty 2023 in our crosshairs, and surprising no one, the next big release will be Modern Warfare 3. Although we were originally promised 2022's Modern Warfare 2 would be a grand affair spanning two years, Activision couldn't help the dollar signs in its eyes and decided to stick with annual releases.

As with all Call of Duty titles, the surprise was spoiled long ahead of Activision's official reveal. We've only had a brief teaser so far, with a reveal event taking over Warzone on August 17. While we twiddle our thumbs, even more leaks are making it through the cracks.

Modern Warfare 3 could skip Xbox One

It's been nearly three years since the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series released, but while some gamers are calling for a move into new-gen consoles, issues like the pandemic mean not everyone has been able to nab one. Alongside this, developers and publishers are still clinging to their last-gen systems.

As Call of Duty's deal with Sony nears an end - and the Microsoft acquisition comes into play - we know Modern Warfare 3 is releasing on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. When it comes to Xbox, there are worries the Xbox One will be locked out of the party.

Trusted leaker GhostofHope has noticed that the Xbox store page for Modern Warfare 3 only lists Xbox Series X|S as its available platforms. Considering Call of Duty is consistently the best-selling game year after year, it would be a bold move to annex such a large number of players.

Call of Duty community divided by last-gen limitations

The news split the CoDverse down the middle, with some outraged that Sledgehammer could lock them out of playing the next big CoD, while others think it's time to cut the cord and move with the times.

One grumbled, "Current gen only? I feel like a decent amount of ppl still play on old gen hardware," while another added, "It'd be wild for them to make it Current gen only, especially considering Series S specs is just a suped up PS4 Pro so it's not like they'd have to go THAT far to port it to last gen."

Someone else argued, "Games today shouldn't be held back by 2013 hardware anymore." Another said, "I was wondering when CoD would finally move to current gen properly, hope this is the year." Someone concluded, "It's been 3 years. current phones easily outperform the old consoles, i think it’s time to move on."

It's unclear what's going on, as someone in the comments claims they have a friend at GameStop, who confirmed the store is taking pre-orders for PS4 and Xbox One. With the official reveal just a matter of days away, the confusion will hopefully be cleared up soon.
