Call of Duty's most iconic weapon ever is being added to multiplayer for the first time, as Sledgehammer Games is cracking open the mystery box in Modern Warfare 3.

The Ray Gun holds a special place in the hearts of Call of Duty fans around the globe, who all grew up splashing plasma at Zombies.

Now, hackers have opened the gates of hell and brought forward the Ray Gun into multiplayer early, ruining the game, and the developers are not happy.

Modern Warfare 3 hackers are unlocking the Ray Gun in multiplayer

Sledgehammer Games' Vortex game mode will bring the Ray Gun into multiplayer as part of the mid-season update, but it appears that the devs have made some form of code that allows hackers to infiltrate public games with this futuristic, one-shot, splash-damage-inflicting brute.

One Modern Warfare 3 player encountered a Ray Gun hacker on the new Meat map, where they were obliterated time and time again as the lasers rained across the map at every opportunity.

The glitch has been reported by quite a number of players so far, as it appears hackers are grasping the weapon more frequently.

But thanks to some nifty tricks by Sledgehammer and the prevalent joker/anti-cheat software Ricochet, those hackers are about to blast their own K/D into oblivion.

MW3 devs pledge to troll Ray Gun hackers

Taking to Twitter, Call of Duty revealed that any smart-ass who grabs a Ray Gun early through "illicit" ways will begin dying to their own hacks. "Players illicitly accessing the Ray Gun in Multiplayer will now inflict self-damage upon use," the devs said.

That'll teach them. The Vortex game mode should be on its way in just over a month, as the mid-season update arrives, which will also bring forth Ranked play to Modern Warfare 3, as party-mode lovers and sweats will part ways.

Interestingly, it's not the first time that the Ray Gun has been snuck into non-Zombies parts of CoD, as Easter Eggs intentionally left in by one developer allowed players to unlock the laser-shooter in the World at War campaign - although this time, the developer got a slap on the wrist, rather than punked on by his colleagues.
