Since Modern Warfare 3 came out in November 2023, Sledgehammer has been banging the drum to keep the title fresh and not necessarily championing the nostalgic maps that were pushed on the title.
Original map designs and re-skinned Vortex variants have shifted focus away from the classic Estate and Terminal layouts. But the latter, the hell-forsaken remasters of a remaster, are hated by the player base. Some have even dubbed them "disgusting" and a detriment to the experience with poor visuals.
Modern Warfare 3 fans want Vortex maps to be banished
Vortex maps were originally quite popular, especially Skidgrow, which was pleasantly better than the dull and grey Skidrow colour palette and was heightened by The Walking Dead crossover that fit like a rotten glove.
But now, it seems players are fed up with this hellish gloss and prefer the matte finish of the original maps. A group of fans has taken to Reddit to call on the developers to "Get these disgusting and depressing maps out of rotation already," claiming that they "make them sick."
"They are horrible. Both the lighting and sound effects are terrible," another fan added. Others argued Zombies would be a better fit for these maps, given that multiplayer maps have been the basis for Modern Warfare 3's undead modes.
"It was weird seeing these maps for the first time cause at the moment you're like this is so cool! But then, after many matches, it really doesn't fit the multiplayer aesthetic it more fits the line of Zombies," argued one fan.
Another argued the Zombies point too, adding, "Make them zombies maps a la Onslaught Containment style from BOCW...Just make the mode SHG please, because MWZ is gonna be a wasteland when BO6 comes out, we need a method to play zombies locally/privately."
The Vortex mode was also criticised for its weird Ray Gun animation, leaving this as a rare Sledgehammer swing-and-miss.
