Long gone are the days when Call of Duty public lobbies had such meaning, a time when enemies were made, friendships forged, and smack-talkers humbled. Or so we thought.
For years, Activision has been consciously disbanding all lobbies after one round of fixtures, ramping up SBMM and making sure that toxicity in one game doesn't spill over to the next. But Sledgehammer Games is rolling back the years.
Sledgehammer Games toys with continuous lobby features for MW3
After many, many, many years of begging from the Call of Duty players, Sledgehammer Games is trialling out continuous lobbies. It's a feature that was scrapped from the series in favour of a disbanding system.
The new system will allow players to toggle whether they want to stay in lobbies after the game has finished, which can make for some competitive games, even in a casual manner.
It's not a plan to fester bad manners, as there is actually a lovely breeding ground for friendships here. We often get stories of mates who have been bonded in the flames of a Search and Destroy lobby, eventually meeting up in real life and attending each other's weddings.
Call of Duty's new matchmaking process comes with toxicity barrier
It's no surprise that this new feature also comes hand-in-hand with the new voice-monitoring system, which will record players' voice comms in a bid to avoid abusive language.
Fans have quickly cottoned onto this, which could actually make CoD a much safer place. That's even with the returning factor of continuing lobbies, which does historically have some flaws.
"So they’ve finally given the option of persistent lobbies after adding the authoritarian voice com monitor, hmm," said one fan on Reddit, claiming a big brother-like dystopia.
You could be on your way to a lifelong friend or enemy on your next trip into Modern Warfare 3, though. Just make sure your emotions don't boil over, otherwise, the only lifetime sentence you'll be getting will be a ban from CoD.
