Modern Warfare could be in trouble as devs ‘unhappy’ with Call of Duty 2026

Modern Warfare 4 is slated as the title for Call of Duty 2026, but it's reportedly in peril as the developers are 'unhappy' with the way the series is progressing.

The original Modern Warfare series was beloved by fans. Even the strongest of Black Ops fans will tip their hats to Infinity Ward for the signature standpoint it put on the Call of Duty franchise with iconic games and characters.

But the reboot hasn't been as successful. MW2019 was particularly Marmite, while Modern Warfare 2 was, erm, primarily bad. Modern Warfare 3 has (now) been well received, with Sledgehammer Games catering to fans' desires.

This reportedly hasn't gone down well in the board room, though. Leaks claim that the Modern Warfare series is in peril, with Modern Warfare 4 (slated to be coming in 2026) already at a "standstill" with "unhappy" developers.

Modern Warfare 4 development hits a roadblock with devs 'unhappy' at new movement mechanics

Black Ops 6 is set to revolutionise Call of Duty with omnimovement, but Treyarch has always championed skill gaps while Infinity Ward prefers to cater to the masses. This has reportedly become a factor in disgruntlement for the future of Modern Warfare.

According to renowned leaker "BobNetworkUK", production of Modern Warfare 4 has already hit a "standstill" as the team is "unhappy with the narrative and mechanics of the game". They explained, "Activision is putting severe pressure on the studio as a whole."

Omnimovement is reportedly one of these mechanics, as Bob added, "They hate that s**t apparently." Modern Warfare's saving grace could be its ties to Warzone, knowing Infinity Ward's engine is used for the battle royale.

Still, Activision will be hot on the heels of the studio to make sure MW4 gets the series back on track, or not to see the light of day again. A new sub-franchise could be on the cards...

Modern Warfare 4 is reportedly set to remaster MW3 (2011)

The in-development Modern Warfare 4 is supposed to have the same relationship with Modern Warfare 3 (2011) as Modern Warfare 3 (2023) has with Modern Warfare 2 (2009). If you're confused, you aren't the only one.

Jokes aside, the rumoured MW4 title has early plans to reuse the maps from the old MW3 game, including the likes of Dome, Resistance, Seatown, Village, and more.

Whether this will stick is unknown, as it's clear that Infinity Ward needs to come out with a strong statement. Either way, the recipe for reusing assets is one of the few questionable areas in Sledgehammer's current title.
