Out of each and every Call of Duty Zombies experience that we've had over these many years, players can confidently say that Infinite Warfare was the worst of the bunch.

Regardless of whether you weren't a fan of the plain and beige Nacht Der Untoten in World at War, or thought Die Maschine was a step too far away from the core experience, Infinite Warfare's slapdash Zombies mode was far from just indifferent, it was judged just to be bad.

But that doesn't mean Zombies can't function outside of Treyarch games though, and now Modern Warfare developers are hitting back at critics who are sitting on that fence.

Modern Warfare 3 devs defend Zombies inclusion

Infinite Warfare Zombies was the first time that we saw Treyarch hand off the undead game mode to a different lead developer, although it had input from the original creators, and it besmirched the reputation of

But just as Treyarch breaks the trend again and lends Zombies to Sledgehammer Games for Modern Warfare 3, Zombies developer Brian Bright has now hit back at critics of IW.

After seeing a Zombies fan make an Easter egg tutorial on YouTube, Bright said, "It is cool people enjoy what we did with IW Zombies."

He followed this up with a sassy lash-out though, adding, "Too bad we were told zombies do not belong in MW games. (Now they are in MW3, lol)."

Bright worked on Call of Duty with Infinity Ward for over six years and a further four whilst at Neversoft, working on titles from the original MW3, and Ghosts to the rebooted Modern Warfare series in 2019.

Infinite Warfare Zombies nearly didn't exist

The mishap that was Infinite Warfare Zombies almost didn't happen too, and the non-Treyarch-centric experience wouldn't have served as the perfect learning curve to make what we have coming in Modern Warfare 3.

"We were told aliens did not belong in IW as it was already a jump to take COD to space," Bright continued in another Tweet.

"'Aliens' err the Cryptids in Extinction didn’t belong in Infinite Warfare either since the studio was nervous about taking the franchise to space. That is why we did Zombies," he added.

"Zombies in Spaceland was partially spawned from the team making fun of a space COD."

Although the jury is still out for how this open-world DMZ and Zombies crossover will perform, the developers have clearly come a long way since IW.
