Sea of Thieves has been plodding along nicely since its launch, and surprisingly, it has become one of the most consistent games out there.

The swashbuckling adventure has been adding content to its seven seas fairly frequently, and as a result, its consistent player numbers remain engaged - even despite it's release back in 2018.

Its crossovers have a good deal to do with it, and the appearance of Pirates of the Caribbean's Captain Jack Sparrow helped to rope new and old players alike into the open ocean. But now, as an exciting Monkey Island crossover rears its head, not everyone is happy.

Of all the people you'd expect to be excited about a giant crossover between Sea of Thieves and the puzzling classic franchise, you'd think it'd be the series' creator - but as it turns out, he didn't have the foggiest idea that the crossover was happening at all.

Asked about the crossover on Mastodon and his involvement in the project, Ron Gilbert replies with a succinct "Nope. It was all done without my knowledge or input," adding later, "Wasn't even told about it. Happened behind my back."

It's a real shame that the original creator of the series wasn't involved in the creation of the Monkey Island crossover, but he's had to go on to clarify.

Ron Gilbert knew about the SoT crossover - but wasn't involved

In a slightly contradictory follow-up, Gilbert has added that he did, in fact know that it was happening, but wasn't directly involved in its production.

"Just to clarify The Sea of Thieves thing since some press are making assumptions: I was given a heads up before the announce, but wasn't given an opportunity to be meaningfully involved," he says. "I do wish the game well. I love Monkey Island."

The pair have always been linked with a Monkey Island Easter egg appearing in Sea of Thieves in 2021. It's fascinating that the crossover even went ahead without the say-so of its creator - but we guess that's just the way the cookie crumbles in the industry.
