It's quite befitting that all we can hear are the cries of "justice for injustice" as NetherRealm Studios announce another instalment to its blockbuster franchises.

Although it's not exactly a surprise because it's been teased and leaked at almost every turn, at least we finally know Mortal Kombat 12 is on the way.

But amid the announcement of NetherRealm's twelfth game in the series, Injustice fans can be heard sobbing in the Twitter replies. It's no surprise after co-creator Ed Boon has trolled the community about returning to the world of DC gods and monsters.

Mortal Kombat 12 Is Coming But Ed Boon Mocks Injustice Fans

NetherRealm didn't exactly announce Mortal Kombat 12, but was naive enough to slip it into a Warner Bros. Discover earnings call in the hope that it would fly under the radar. With Mortal Kombat being one of the most iconic fighters of all time, there was little chance of that happening.

But with the upcoming title now being plonked in the public eye, Boon has joked with fans in his typical way about Injustice 3. Boon has used the Mortal Kombat leak as ample opportunity to highlight the potential of an Injustice trilogy.

Injustice fans have been asking for another chance to let their favourite DC characters knock seven bells out of each other, with Injustice 2 being a huge hit back in 2017. Now, Boon's jibe has only reminded fans that they're missing out.

Are We Ever Getting Injustice 3?

Mortal Kombat's next title is expected to be released in 2023, meaning it lands just four years after the eleventh instalment in the series came out. Boon teased either MK12 or Injustice 3 last November, and with one ticked off, it makes sense the latter is next.

But with Mortal Kombat taking the top spot on the priority list and Injustice 3 waiting in the wings, it could be even longer before the DC characters get their boxing gloves out. One thing is for sure, though. If Injustice 3 is in development, it won't be ready this year.

Maybe the developers are silently biding their time to see how Rocksteady's Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League shapes up and James Gunn's plans to integrate video game into the DC Universe play out - staying away from the antihero pool until the hype has cooled down.
