Following a last-ditch effort from Ricochet to purge Modern Warfare 2 of its hacker infestation, 14,000 accounts were hit with the ban hammer.

But just a few weeks after this wave occurred, Modern Warfare 2 fans noticed something rather alarming.

According to numerous posts on Reddit, there has been an influx of new accounts that are of "suspiciously low levels" in accordance with their skill, indicating that all the hackers are back on fresh accounts.

Modern Warfare 2 hackers are back after huge ban wave

With Modern Warfare 2 being nearly eight months old now, most players who have stuck it out and enjoyed the offerings this year have amassed several-hundred levels worth of XP, whether that's through challenges or simply grinding the game.

However, players are now finding that there are much more accounts than usual popping up that are below level 100, indicating that they are new to the game, although their skill suggests otherwise.

"I'm noticing more and more players who are level 23 to 250 in my matches," said one fan, pointing out that these low-level players are also "dominating" in games, proving that they're a smurf.

"Seeing a level 100 constantly drop shot, hitting all their bullets, knows where to aim, knows where to toss nades and etc, that doesn't make sense to me."

Are Modern Warfare 2 hackers back on Smurf accounts?

Quite a few Reddit threads have made similar claims, meaning that there could be quite a good number of returning banned accounts.

Others pointed out that there are also a bunch of hackers in Warzone still too, leaving them wondering why Activision cannot enforce hardware or IP bans.

"14k bans and I saw a fly hacker today in Warzone," said one Call of Duty fan on Reddit.

"Why don't Activision just IP and hardware ban these accounts?" they added.

On the flip side, maybe there are just a lot of good players who didn't enjoy Modern Warfare 2 and fancied giving it another go...
