While the majority of players in Modern Warfare 2 run around with their favourite meta AR or SMG, others prefer to utilise a trusty melee weapon. Bashing an opponent may deal a significant amount of damage, but it does require you to get face-to-face with a foe.
As a result, it's key the game registers your melee hits on an enemy, or it's almost guaranteed that you're going to die. Now, severe hitbox issues are effectively making melee weapons useless and are frustrating a lot of MW2 players.
Hitbox problems are making melee useless in MW2
Taking to the ModernWarfareII subreddit, user NOTaPyroWolf decided to showcase the hitbox problems plaguing melee weapons in MW2 multiplayer. During a chaotic Shipment match, NOTaPyroWolf ran into an enemy crouched on the ground using a kill streak.
Instead of gunning down the helpless foe, they decided to use melee to take them out as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, despite hitting them with the Tonfa over 10 times, the weapon did no damage. In the end, NOTaPyroWolf gave up and shot the opponent with their ISO 45, which killed them instantly.
What's causing the hitbox issues in MW2?
While the source of the hitbox issues in the clip hasn't been confirmed by a dev, a lot of users in the thread believe it's related to an enemy having a Riot Shield on their back.
According to them, the shields are a "magnet for bullets" and melee damage, meaning the hitboxes always "feel janky" when shooting someone with one on their back.
Not only that, in their experience, these melee hitbox problems "never seem to happen to anyone without" a Riot Shield equipped.
This is definitely something the devs need to look into, as melee is a huge part of MW2 multiplayer and damage not registering will always be unbelievably frustrating for players in a competitive title.
