There have been plenty of iconic weapons in Call of Duty history, from the Intervention to the OG UMP45, some guns have just ingrained themselves into the memory of the community.
However, you could argue that none are more recognisable than the powerhouse Ray Gun, a pistol that could only be acquired in the various Zombies modes over the years.
Well, Sledgehammer is finally bringing the undead exterminator to multiplayer during the Modern Warfare 3 Season 1 update.
Before you panic though, you won't have to worry about being beamed down by the Ray Gun in your next Search and Destroy match. The weapon is coming to MW3 multiplayer with a new limited-time mode.
Ray Gun is coming to Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer
As showcased by the popular Call of Duty account ModernWarzone, the Ray Gun will be coming to Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer in a new limited-time mode.
This LTM is called Vortex and has a free-for-all format, so you'll be a lone wolf while hunting down your foes. The rules are pretty simple, one player spawns with the one-shot Ray Gun, and anyone that eliminates the Operator with the powerful weapon becomes the new owner.
Map-wise, Sledgehammer have created three otherworldly versions of the MW2 (2009) locations we know all too well, in the form of Satan's Quarry, Sporeyard, and Tetanus.
There has been some panic that the OP Ray Gun is coming to all MW3 modes, rest assured, the deadly pistol is only going to be available in the LTM.
When will the Vortex LTM arrive in MW3?
As revealed by the MW3 Season 1 blog, the Vortex LTM will arrive in multiplayer in "mid-season," so don't expect to be obliterating foes with the Ray Gun on December 6.
There's no denying that this limited-time mode looks awesome and will reward sharpshooters with top-tier aim as well as fast reflexes. However, with so many players hunting down the Ray Gun, it will be a challenge to hold onto the weapon for long.
