It's that time again, when we roll out the hype train, only to bulldoze your hopes that we'll be getting another Fallout game from Obsidian Entertainment. Like the continued whispers of a Bloodborne remake or Banjo-Kazooiee reboot, few rumours get the blood pumping quite like a Fallout: New Vegas sequel.
With Bethesda taking the reins for Fallout 3, there were questions about what to do with the inevitable gap between the third game and the eventual release of Fallout 4. The answer was to give Obsidian Entertainment the keys to the vault and for the team to deliver Fallout: New Vegas as a spin-off in 2010.
Fans hope Obsidian can return to the world of Fallout
Obsidian has a lot on its plate, with Avowed coming later this year and The Outer Worlds 2 coming at some point beyond that. It's also thought that Obsidian will still be providing support for Grounded on PS5 and Switch, but if that team's done, it could free up some of the workforce to work on this mystery third game.
Over on Reddit, gamers spotted that Obsidian Art Director Daniel Cabuco has listed an "unannounced title" on his LinkedIn. There's no word on when this game could be announced or what it involves, but with Cabuco seemingly being open about its existence, we're hoping for an imminent announcement.
This has thrown the doors open to speculation, with a popular option being that it could involve New Vegas Director Josh Sawyer. One comment mentions how Pentiment was effectively given the green light as a way to keep Sawyer on board.
Sawyer has previously discussed his own ideas for a fictional New Vegas sequel, saying he'd love to return to the franchise but suggesting a move to California. As we've been burned too many times before by getting our hopes up about a New Vegas sequel, remaster, or return, we'll err on the side of caution.
There are other options, with someone else suggesting, "People hoping it's fallout, I hope it's Pillars [of Eternity] 3." Another added, "My tinfoil hope is that it's the Critical Role video game that has been in some stage of alleged development for a few years now," and a third said, "Alpha Protocol remake/remaster/sequel plz."
Still, you're holding out hope it could be fallout, with someone concluding, "Obsidian going crazy. Grounded, Pentiment, Avowed, and Outer Worlds 2 this gen. Now this unannounced game. There's a solid chance it’s Fallout honestly." Although we won't be placing it all on red, we're willing to take a gamble that Obsidian will roll the dice on another Fallout.
