Netflix’s gaming branch has been a curious project for the streaming service, with plans to bring swathes of video games to mobiles and TVs everywhere via their standard subscription turning heads everywhere. It seems that they’re trying to go the way of Amazon, except rather than building a separate video game studio, they’re trying to smash everything together under one roof.

Some have pointed out that this could spell disaster for Night School Studios, the team behind Oxenfree that the company has absorbed, but we’re yet to see it flop to such a degree that its life is threatened.

And now, it looks like they’re willing to put all of their chips on the table.

Squid Game and Rebel Moon video games are in the works

Netflix has announced that along with the many games it has planned, including the Rebel Moon video game that Zack Snyder himself announced, a new Squid Game video game is being developed for the streaming service’s long list of upcoming titles.

The game was revealed along with a whopping 2024 slate of games that features Cozy Grove: Camp Spirit by Spry Fox, FashionVerse and Game Dev Tycoon. This is a pretty big deal when it comes to announcements, but it’s worth noting that so far, the Squid Game title doesn’t yet have a dev studio attached, even though Netflix has revealed that the game allows the player to "compete with other players in games from the hit series."

"By year’s end, we’ll have 86 games available —all included with every Netflix membership without ads, in-app purchases or extra fees," says Netflix’s vice president of games Mike Verdu in a blog post. "And with nearly 90 more games in development, we’re just getting started."

Netflix just added GTA Trilogy to streaming

In a pretty surprising turn for the streaming service’s gaming output, it has been revealed that today, Netflix is hosting the much-maligned but still hugely popular Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition.

This means that starting now, players can play through updated versions of GTA III, GTA: Vice City, and GTA: San Andreas from their mobile devices using only their Netflix subscriptions.

It’s a pretty massive gain for Netflix’s gaming output, and it’s likely to actually put the fact that the streaming service, best known for film and TV, actually does host video games. Talk about a step in the right direction.
