Netflix has shared a unique behind-the-scenes look at the making of the stop-motion animated Pokémon series, Pokémon Concierge – and it’s as adorable as you would imagine.
The series of shorts takes place in the exclusive Pokémon Resort where Pokémon and their owners can kick back with a little R&R, and this look at the making of the series goes to show just how much work went into animating all the Pokémon models and adhering the game's reputation
Netflix offers a peek behind the curtain
The video, as you’ll see above, takes a look at the challenges of stop-motion animation, particularly in the characterisation of the Pokémon, their powers and the nuances in their behaviour.
Among the Pokémon shown, from Pansage to Metagross, Psyduck is the star attraction, with the animators detailing the simplicity of the body. On the other hand, we see other Pokémon like Pikachu use more complex effects to show off sparks of electricity and fur.
But, it's not just the Pokémon that are the star attraction in these shorts, it's the humans. For instance, the protagonist, Haru, who has around 30 different facial expressions to help effectively convey the emotion of the puppet.
Pokemon Concierge is a fresh take on the series
While there’s no doubt that everyone is familiar with the Pokémon anime and movies, the Pokémon Concierge shorts take a fresh approach to how the Pokémon are presented, and even bear a striking resemblance to the unique Pokemon cards that feature clay-sculpted Pokémon cards of old.
At the very start of the video, Director Iku Ogawa explains that puppet animation for Pokémon had never been done before.
Additionally, Concept Artist and Character Designer, Tadahiro Uesugi detailed that they "didn't want to deviate from the setting of the Pokemon world" but emphasized the fun factor of the animation.
With Pokémon still going strong, especially with the release of the Scarlet and Violet DLC expansions, getting a look behind the curtain is a unique experience that goes to show the love and care that goes into creating everyone's favourite Pokémon.
