For the first time since it launched, Apex Legends isn't getting an annual map, as leaks have now emerged that the developers are lining up a different kind of major update in the final quarter of the year. Respawn Entertainment is reportedly holding back a new map until 2024.
With Kings Canyon, World's Edge, Olympus, Storm Point, and Broken Moon making Apex Legends one of the most diverse battle royales in existence, the map pool has become one of the core pulling points. Players knowing one per year is coming to freshen up the title, it's also great for payer retention.
But not this year, as renowned leakers have revealed that the next Apex Legends map will be named District, but it won't be coming until 2024.
Apex Legends reportedly axing annual map releases
Amid news that Storm Point is set for a major revamp to add more POIs and avoid the typical early-game bonanza, Respawn Entertainment is reportedly eyeing up a different approach to its end-of-year update. The developer seemingly has plans to axe the annual map addition in favour of an engine overhaul.
According to Thordan Smash, Apex is getting a major engine update almost akin to that of Counter-Strike, which intends to increase performance, minimise bugs, combat cheaters more efficiently, and improve the audio quality (one of Apex Legends' biggest issues).
Smash claims this will come at the expense of a new map, although the update to Storm Point will happen instead. However, this doesn't mean a new map isn't in development. Despite Smash's comments saying that there will be no 2023 map, the leaker claims District will be an Apex Legends battleground in 2024.
Apex Legends' new map 'District' leaked
Although it looks likely we won't be diving into a new Apex Legends map in 2023, the leaker claimed District is already in development as a battleground which will come at some point in 2024. The new map will take Apex Legends back to its roots with an evenly-paced design that will be heavily influenced by Titanfall, akin to Kings Canyon.
As our hopes of Titanfall 3 have been pretty much dashed, we'll take whatever Titanfall content we can get, and in whatever form. Smash predicts that the District map is planned for Season 23, which is a huge jump in the timeline.
