Although we were worried about the stagnating Battlefield series for a while, it's reassuring DICE is heading back into the trenches for another war-torn shooter. As Call of Duty continues to go great guns and gears up for Black Ops 6, Battlefield is hopefully coming back in a big way.
Respawn Entertainment's Vince Zampella is lending a hand on the next Battlefield and has confirmed a return to a modern setting for a love letter to franchise highs like Battlefield 3 and 4. We've only got a single piece of concept art, but thankfully, someone has the scoop on what's to come.
Battlefield 6 supposedly on the way
Following in the footsteps of 2021's maligned Battlefield 2042, Insider Gaming's Tom Henderson claims that the next game could be something of a reset and simply be titled Battlefield. If not, it might be called Battlefield 6, suggesting it'll be a sequel to 2018's Battlefield V.
In terms of setting, Henderson suggests the next Battlefield will be set somewhere between 2027 and 2030, with a campaign that focuses on a private military butting heads with NATO. It will be a tour of the world that heads to the likes of Gibraltar (which eagle-eyed fans spotted in the concept art) and the USA.
Battlefield isn't exactly known for its single-player campaigns, but in terms of multiplayer, Henderson says there will be 45 different weapons at launch, while DICE is aiming for 10 multiplayer maps. This number of maps would match up with the likes of Battlefield 1, 3, and 4.
If you want to topple skyscrapers, the next Battlefield will apparently overhaul its destruction mechanics and introduce calibre-based destruction that echoes Rainbow 6 Siege. After Black Ops 6's introduction of omnimovement, Battlefield is also expected to tweak its own movement - adding the ability to pick up and move downed players.
The big one is Zampella's promises that Ripple Effect is working on a "new experience." Insider Gaming reports that this is Battlefield's take on a free-to-play battle royale, which is no surprise considering the next outing will want to compete with Call of Duty: Warzone's success. Apparently, the battle royale experience will be set in a tropical location.
This is all part of the team's 'Battlefield moments' initiative that hopes to bring back moments that made the series what it is. Even though fans were originally struggling to get excited about the next Battlefield, all of the above sounds promising. If you're sold, the "large-scale community-driven testing" could see the return of the Battlefield Community Test Environment (CTE).
If these details are true, it sounds like a faithful evolution of the Battlefield name that could see it back on top. Then again, we heard this all before with Battlefield 2042, and that turned out to be an unmitigated disaster. While most are willing to give Battlefield another chance, this really might be the last chance saloon for the struggling shooter series.
