Saddle up for more bad news because it sounds like the new-gen Red Dead Redemption remaster has been sent off into the desert like a rolling tumbleweed. Although the sequel to 2010's Red Dead Redemption only came out in 2018, there were hopes that a new-gen version would bring Arthur Morgan to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series.
It's safe to say that since Grove Street Games delivered the disappointing Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, Rockstar has been in chaos. Alongside reports that the goliath that is Grand Theft Auto 6 is in a turbulent state, we've also heard that both a GTA 4 and Red Dead Redemption remake has also been axed. Is the new-gen Red Dead Redemption 2 remake the latest casualty?
Has The Red Dead Redemption 2 Remake Been Axed?
Just days after prominent Rockstar leaker Tez2 claimed RDR2 was in the works for PS5 and Xbox Series, they're now reporting it has been given the boot. According to Tez2, Red Dead Redemption 2 has been "cancelled/halted." Given the quick turnaround on this news, it sounds like things have been pretty sudden.
Although there's no specific reason given, it doesn't take a genius to figure out that it's likely two-fold. Alongside the disastrous launch of the GTA Trilogy and fans demanding refunds, there's a big push to GTA 6 right now. Either way, it's not going to do the brand's image any good right now. Red Dead is pretty much dead, with Rockstar confirming it won't deliver major updates to the online game moving forward.
It's clear to see Rockstar's focus is on GTA right now, meaning at least you can get your fix from GTA Online. There's a lot riding on GTA 6, and with its announcement tweet being the most-liked gaming tweet of all time, the pressure is mounting by the day.
Fans React To New-Gen Red Dead Redemption 2 Axe
At a time Rockstar is already being dragged for the dire straits of Red Dead, the timing couldn't be worse. One critic said, "Feels like they hate their own IP," while another added, "I can't understand why they wouldn't want to bring out a PS5/XSX version of RDR2 when it's sold over 40m copies." A third simply concluded, "An upsetting way to abandon one of the most beautiful open-world games of all time. The red dead community has every right to be angry. I feel sorry for the community that deserves better! Rockstar just cannot win!"
With Tez2 saying we'll never get a new-gen Red Dead Redemption 2, it's a pretty damning prognosis. Despite keeping GTA Online updated, there's been so little output from Rockstar since 2013, some are questioning what the team is actually doing. As the acclaimed developer leads its once-beloved franchise out back like a lame horse, let's get an F in the chat for Red Dead. Well, there go our hopes of an Undead Nightmare sequel.
