Insomniac Games just can't seem to catch a break, and after a ransomware attack revealed the studio's upcoming plans for potential Spider-Man and X-Men games, there's been a steady flow of leaks about the upcoming Wolverine game.
After Rocksteady Studios showed us how to make a great superhero game with the Arkham trilogy, Insomniac took elements of that formula and gave Marvel its own time to shine with 2018's Spider-Man. Following the OG and 2020's Miles Morales, 2024's Spider-Man 2 continued the series' legacy with another chart-topping PlayStation exclusive.
Marvel's Wolverine leaks...for Steam Deck
Despite being announced all the way back at a 2021 PlayStation showcase, there's still no sign of Marvel's Wolverine. It's baffling to think there's only been one cinematic trailer, and with Insomniac holding back on giving us even a *snik* of gameplay, leakers have taken it upon themselves.
The Insomniac attack was particularly brutal on Wolverine, with early builds of cutscenes and whole levels quickly making their way online. Now, Reddit user u/LongJonSilver has shown off a rough-looking build playing on the Steam Deck. Although it looks like something from the PS One era, it's seemingly the real deal.
There's an impressive roster of wardrobe choices, showing off the fan-favourite "Patch" tux from the comics, an Insomniac suit, and Weapon-X homage. We then dive straight into action, with all that typical Insomniac gameplay you'll recognise from the Spider-Man games. It ends during a fight with what looks like Lady Deathstrike.
Players praised traversal, with Logan likely using his claws to scale buildings instead of using Spider-Man's web shooters. It's unclear how his healing ability will work, but with the claws out, we're destined to get a much more adult Insomniac game.
Although there's nothing too revelatory, it gives us a better look at how Wolverine could play out. Major story points are already out there on the internet if you know where to look, but like Spider-Man set up a whole Marvel Gaming Universe with mentions of Doctor Strange and Daredevil, expect Wolverine to do the same for the X-Men.
Considering the Steam Deck can run both Spider-Man and its sequel, there are high hopes that we'll eventually get to play Wolverine on the handheld. Of course, these games have launched on PlayStation before being released on PC (therefore playable on Steam). With no Wolverine release date in sight, a potential Steam release is even further away.
