A brand-new Mafia game was confirmed to be in development during a Q&A session with the lead of Hanger 13.

The Mafia series is enjoying its 20th anniversary this year, as 2K Games and Hangar 13 celebrate the long-running crime franchise. So far they've released a trailer celebrating the trilogy, allowed players to claim the first game on Steam for completely free, and now a fourth instalment has finally been confirmed to be in early development after months of speculation.

New Mafia Game Announced

The year has seen many rumours relating to the Mafia franchise, with Bloomberg reporting back in May that a new game was in development despite multiple cuts to staff. This new game is no longer just rumour though, as the fourth instalment in the franchise has been officially confirmed by 2K Games and Hangar 13.

Confirmation of a new game came during the Mafia 20th anniversary developer interview on the franchise's official website, with the Hangar 13 GM Roman Hladík revealing the news at the end. "I'm happy to confirmed we've started work on an all-new Mafia project!" Hladík stated before continuing, "while it's a few years away, and we can't share anything more right now, we're really excited to keep working on this beloved franchise and to entertain our players with new stories."

What Were The Previous Mafia Leaks?

What Were The Previous Mafia Leaks?

After the initial leaks of the next Mafia game being in development, there were more rumours relating to the content of the next entry. On an episode of the XboxEra Podcast in May, Nick Baker revealed that Mafia 4 would be a prequel to the trilogy, set sometime in the late 19th and early 20th century. Supposedly it will follow Don Salieri, a main character and one of the big crime bosses in the first game, and will likely follow his rise to power from Sicily to America, which is essentially The Godfather.

Baker also claimed that this next instalment could be more linear than the previous entries, which were open-world similarly to Saints Row or Grand Theft Auto. This would make for a big shake-up of the franchise, but we won't know exactly what form it will take until Hangar 13 reveal more details in the future.
