New report suggests Black Myth: Wukong is a PS5 exclusive after all

Several outlets are reporting that Sony's potential purchase of exclusivity for Black Myth: Wukong has stopped the game's supposed Xbox release in its tracks.

If you're an Xbox owner and are wondering when you'll be able to play Black Myth: Wukong, we wouldn't count on jumping into this animalistic adventure anytime soon. There are swirling rumours of 'monkey business' going on behind the scenes, and if true, it threatens to open up some old console war wounds.

Despite its infancy, Black Myth: Wukong is already setting its stall out as a potential Game of the Year contender and asking, "What if Elden Ring had monkeys?" However, aside from some uncomfortable accusations of controversy stopping some of you from picking up a copy, others could be locked out altogether.

Sony accused of paying for Black Myth: Wukong exclusivity

Forbes' Paul Tassi first floated the idea that Black Myth: Wukong's promised Xbox release was being held back due to PlayStation exclusivity. Although this seemed unlikely because it's never been mentioned, IGN has corroborated the reports, suggesting an agreement with Sony is strangling the MIA Xbox port.

Both outlets claim to have heard from a source (unknown if it's the same source) that the supposed technical issues being blamed for the Xbox delay are actually a cover for Sony exclusivity. Spanish leaker eXtas1s said that Xbox devs were claiming it was a memory leak issue at Gamescom, but this might not be true.

Tassi adds, "I was not told the duration of this exclusivity deal, but it does not appear to be permanent," giving hope to Xbox owners eventually being able to play Black Myth: Wukong. What's baffling is that if all of the above is true, why haven't Sony or Game Science publicly disclosed the deal as is the usual standard practice?

Whatever is going on, it's clear something is amiss with Black Myth: Wukong's Xbox release. A series of contradictory statements have been doing the rounds since back in June when gamers first noticed that the title's Summer Game Fest trailer removed the Xbox Series X|S logo.

Critics have accused Forbes and IGN of scaremongering, with some going as far as calling the outlets 'anti-PlayStation.' Others have noted that it seems strange to have paid for exclusivity only to not market it. Sony has never been afraid to shout about its exclusive games, so something isn't adding up here.

Game Science hasn't responded to IGN yet, while Tassi says he's trying to clarify what's going on. Either way, Black Myth: Wukong's Xbox port being lost in a sea of rumours makes this one of the weirdest AAA releases we've seen in a while.
