Next Battlefield game tipped to rip off Black Ops 6's best feature

New job listings hint that DICE's work on the next Battlefield game could be pointing at an open-world title akin to Treyarch's Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.

There's an old saying in gaming that if you can't beat 'em, join 'em. We've seen this time and again with battle royale games like Apex Legends, Warzone, and Fortnite moving in a constant circle of pinching each other's ideas. Now, it could be Battlefield's turn.

When it comes to warfare shooters, Battlefield and Call of Duty have been joined at the hip since inception. Although Battlefield arrived on the scene first with 2002's Battlefield 1942, it wasn't long until CoD arrived to the party with another WWII-set shooter in 2003. Since then, they've tussled for the top.

Next Battlefield could be going open-world

Sadly for Battlefield, CoD has long since claimed the crown as the king of the shooters, churning out entries on a yearly basis and leaving DICE's series in the dust. You only have to look at the frosty reception to Battlefield 2042 and the fact we've still not heard much about the next game, all while the CoDverse has continued to sweep up.

Die-hard Battlefield supporters hope that some time away to collect their thoughts will lead to a bigger and better game. But then again, weren't we promised that with 2042? However, while CoD has been beavering away, the Battlefield devs are watching patiently from the shadows and learning a thing or two.

Over on the Tech4Gamers forum, one member has found a listing for a Senior Environment Artist, specifically being recruited for the next Battlefield. The important bit is the mention of how "open world experience is a plus." While this doesn't outright confirm it'll be open-world, it's our best hint yet.

The OP notes that while Battlefield has typically had bigger and more open-world-esque areas than most FPS games, DICE might be taking a leaf out of CoD's book. Modern Warfare 3 toyed with those disappointing Open Combat Missions, but when it comes to Black Ops 6, it looks like the Campaign is going open-world

Opinions were split on the idea of an open-world Battlefield, with one fan writing, "Wow, this could be a game-changer for Battlefield. Open-world environments might give players more freedom, but I hope they don't lose the intense, moment-to-moment action that made the series great."

Someone else added, "Open-world Battlefield? Sounds like a mix of chaos and epic gameplay moments! Can't wait to see how they'll balance it," but one sceptic concluded, "Not sure how I feel about Battlefield going open-world. Won't it lose the tight, focused action it's known for? 🤔."

It's clear that Battlefield needs to reinvent itself after the dumpster fire that was 2042. We were promised destructible skyscrapers that never came to pass, and instead, it became an Apex Legends clone that was stuffed with MTX to keep it afloat. Can the next Battlefield really beat CoD at its own game, or will it just become another forgotten fumble like its predecessor?
