Popular video game music-themed YouTube channel, GilvaSunner, was hit with thousands of copyright claims. Now, YouTube has officially confirmed that it was in fact Nintendo who issued the claims.

In recent times, Nintendo has gained a bit of a reputation for hammering down hard on anyone who reuses its media in a public way, including passionate fans who use Nintendo-owned media for their content. In particular, their music. Despite the gaming giant having produced some of the most iconic soundtracks ever to be created, there is currently no way to listen to the tunes officially through Nintendo.

So, many fans have decided to roll up their sleeves and do the job themselves. However, in the process, they have been quickly reprimanded for breaking copyright rules. One such channel, "GilvaSunner" has announced that they have closed their channel after being hit with thousands of copyright claims from Nintendo.

How Do We Know That Nintendo Filed The Copyright Claims Against GilvaSunner?

On February 4, a Twitter user reached out directly to YouTuber claiming she'd heard that the "GilvaSunner copyright claims are most likely NOT from Nintendo, and are instead most likely someone impersonating Nintendo." However, YouTube themselves promptly responded: "Jumping in – we can confirm that the claims on GilvaSunner's channel are from Nintendo. These are all valid and in full compliance with copyright rules."

The news comes after GilvaSunner was suddenly hit with 1,300 copyright claims for posting videos featuring Nintendo's music in January of this year. Up to 17 of Nintendo's iconic game soundtracks were flagged with claims, including The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Luigi's Mansion, and Super Mario Galaxy

This is yet another example of a content creator being hit hard by Nintendo for using its media. For example, in November 2020, a beloved Super Smash Bros. tournament was put to a halt unexpectedly following a copyright issue.

GilvaSunner Shuts Down YouTube Channel

Following the mind-blowing amount of copyright claims from Nintendo, GilvaSunner announced via Twitter that he would be closing down the channel on February 4.

Explaining that his channel had been hit with 2,200 more claims, GilvaSunner said: "After thinking about this a lot over the past few days, I've decided that at this point it's really not worth it to keep the channel up any longer, and will therefore delete the GilvaSunner YouTube channel (or what’s left of it) this coming Friday."

GilvaSunner claimed they understood how "disappointing" the news would be. However, they proceeded to thank fans for their "11+ years" of support.

Nintendo may have been eyeing up potential investments in NFTs for the future. Although it appears when it comes to fans who 'break' copyright rules with their content, Nintendo won't be taking any gambles.
