The Nintendo Switch has been on sale for over six years and it has become a mainstay console in a lot of gamers' lives. With over 125 million units sold, a lot of people have put time and money into the console and its game library.

This has caused some concerns about backwards compatibility with the next console, which is rumoured to be coming sooner rather than later.

Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser has not confirmed anything about the new console at this stage, however he has suggested that Nintendo is looking at ways to help the transition between devices go smoothly.

Doug Bowser has suggested Nintendo want to ease the transition between consoles

In an interview with Inverse, Doug Bowser, the president of Nintendo of America, teased that the Nintendo Account would be integral in bringing data between consoles.

He said: “One thing we've done with the Switch to help with that communication and transition is the formation of the Nintendo Account. In the past, every device we transitioned to had a whole new account system.

“Creating the Nintendo Account will allow us to communicate with our players if and when we make a transition to a new platform, to help ease that process or transition.

“Our goal is to minimise the dip you typically see in the last year of one cycle and the beginning of another. I can't speak to the possible features of a new platform, but the Nintendo Account is a strong basis for having that communication as we make the transition.”

Switch players are hoping the Switch will be backwards compatible

One of the main things that Nintendo fans are concerned about is the possibility of losing their game libraries to a new console.

While being able to carry digital games over would be a positive for many players, it does not prevent people from losing access to their massive physical libraries if the next console uses a different type of cartridge or goes entirely digital.

This is especially prevalent as huge new releases are coming out for the Switch, like Mario Wonder, which may end up having short life-spans if the next device is not backwards compatible and people are not willing to purchase multiple copies.

Nothing about the next console has been confirmed by Nintendo at this stage, so there is still a possibility that the same cartridges will be usable across devices. At least the future for digital backwards compatibility is looking bright.
