Copyright battles in the video game industry are never fun, but that's mostly because it's a giant coming down on the little guy. The loudest example is Nintendo's love of the good ol' cease-and-desist letter, shutting down YouTube streams of soundtracks, Smash Bros. tournaments, fan games, and more.
Few large developers are willing to let fans have fun with their IP, and rumours struck this week that two co-workers were going to war over their daft, simple logos. As often happens in the gaming world, it turns out we had the wrong end of the stick the whole time.
Rockstar and Remedy's dispute called a 'formality'
The news recently broke that Rockstar had its Take-Two Interactive co-workers at Remedy Entertainment in its legal sights as a result of a company logo that was deemed too similar to its own. The internet devolved into a frenzy, accusing Rockstar of jumping the gun and Remedy of being thieves.
Now, a new representative on behalf of Remedy has revealed that the action isn't quite as dramatic as it once seemed. Game File's Stephen Totilo has revealed on Twitter that they've received correspondence from Remedy Games.
It apparently reads, "There is nothing to see here – this was a discussion between our teams that was resolved entirely and amicably late last year. The legal filing was simply an initial formality, and Remedy and Take-Two continue to work together in partnership."
Fans are confused by how formal a legal threat can be
The comment from Remedy has assured fans that the company is at least not in trouble with Rockstar's legal eagles, but fans have taken to Twitter to share their confusion - just how "formal" can legal proceedings be? How does a company go on with its coworker having tried to sue them?
One confused gamer questioned, "I don't know if I would work amicably with people that tried to sue my ass...weird social dynamic." Another added, "Tee hee sometimes besties sue each other as a fun prank." Well, at least it should return to business as usual, and the two gaming powerhouses can get back to actually making games.
It's definitely bizarre for sure, but perhaps in the upper echelons of the gaming industry, the rules change. We likely wouldn't be besties with those who tried to sue us, but whatever works for them.
