Old Call of Duty players cannot believe what the series has become after checking out for a few years.

The Call of Duty franchise definitely isn't what it used to be.

Back in the golden age, the arcade shooter was heavily war-based, with real-life conflicts being depicted like World War 2.

But nowadays, Nicki Minaj is getting her boots muddy in the trenches and blue-flamed pumpkin heads are harvesting souls, and now some of the older fans in the community are gobsmacked.

Call of Duty fans stunned by how far the franchise has moved away from its roots

Modern Warfare 3 is currently having quite the dance with the devil with its new Halloween-themed skins, and as they've been broadcast out into the open, some of the more established fans have been left gobsmacked.

One particular fan of the franchise, who hasn't played Call of Duty since back in the Black Ops 2 era, took to Reddit to express just how shocked they were at seeing a ram-skeleton-helmed Operator taking on a golden-tinted Spawn on the Modern Warfare 3's Steam home page.

The Redditor was met with comments such as "Just played a game as Homelander, Skeletor, Kevin Durant and Nikki Minaj," showing just how wild some of the crossovers have become.

Others called it "Activision's attempt at Fortniting CoD," and claimed that it no longer deserves the "Modern Warfare" name.

"It's not actually modern warfare anymore. They just use that name because they know people like it," another fan added.

Call of Duty fans want a Spawn game

Given that the franchise no longer is the Call of Duty of old, some Call of Duty fans have quizzed why doesn't someone make a Spawn game, off the back of how popular the recent skin releases have been.

"Can we just get a Spawn game?" one fan asked, while another jumped on the bandwagon and added, "There has never been a good Spawn game. The closest thing was a Dreamcast game but even that was ass."

This could then allow Activision to get back to business on making some more straight-and-narrow Operator outfits, taking the series back to its roots.

Coincidentally, a Spawn game could actually be on the way, but only after its upcoming film airs.
