Rumours of an upcoming Xbox achievement overhaul have ramped up after it was mentioned in a podcast that one would be coming in 2024.
Xbox users have been discussing what could be included in the long-awaited update, and many have high hopes that some irritating aspects of achievements could be fixed.
An Xbox Achievement Overhaul may be coming soon
Co-founder of XboxEra.com, Shpeshal Nick, recently stated in an episode of the XboxEra podcast, that an achievement overhaul should be revealed in the next year.
After clarifying that the overhaul is rumour and not fact, he said: “What I’m hearing is that Xbox are nearly done with their achievement overhaul, with changes to achievements, and we should be seeing it next year. When they say next year I’m assuming they’re aware of the fact that it’s New Years Eve, so I guess they mean 2024.
But we should be, at the very least, being shown it, because you know how they sometimes put stuff in beta and then it goes through different rings. It might be one of those things that makes its way through… I don’t know they’re not saying that, I’m saying that.
“But they should be showing, at least showing, maybe not releasing but at least showing, the achievement overhaul, whatever that looks like, next year.”
People have been hoping for an update to Xbox’s achievement system for quite a while, so much so that Phil Spencer teased a potential revamp of how they work in a recent interview with Windows Central.
Spencer said: “There's a hardware roadmap, there's a service roadmap, maybe there's even a roadmap for improvements to Xbox achievements, which I know is something that you and many others care about."
Xbox users hope the update will fix some frustrating quirks
The news that an update is hopefully coming sooner rather than later has led to Xbox users hypothesising about what changes could be made.
Gamers have found several issues with the achievement system, including some achievements no longer being obtainable at all, which they are hoping could be fixed alongside some general improvements.
This has been the topic of several conversations, with one user writing: “I just want them to do something about unobtainable achievements.”
Another said: “Unobtainable achievements should have a flag/report system to either get fixed or removed.”
Some users are hoping for changes linked to 100% completion of games.
One said: “I'd love to get a lil chief badge or something on my account for 100% completion on MCC, it's nice to see this update finally happening.”
“My guess is medals and you can pin X amount to your profile page, the ones you’re most proud of,” added another.
Other suggestions included separating DLC achievements from those found in the base game, improving the rewards system, and the ability to completely remove specific games from the system.
Though nothing is set in stone, an overhaul of the achievements system would certainly be appreciated by a lot of players, and it is hard to imagine one not happening in the near future.
