Someone pass the tissues because it's time for a good cry. The skill of any good game is taking us on a roller coaster of emotions. From hating Tom Nook and his corporate greed to cheering for the little guy of Link to save the day, we fall in love with Jill Valentine, cower from Pyramid Head, and laugh with Trevor Philips.
Some of the most iconic games of all time have tugged at our heartstrings with a good death, and while not everything has the epic yarn of the Final Fantasy games, death can be around the corner wherever you look. Now, fans are discussing the saddest gaming death of all time. Cast your votes.
SPOILER WARNING Given the topic, we'll obviously be going into massive spoilers for some of the biggest games in recent years - including God of War Ragnarok, The Last of Us Part 2 II, and Red Dead Redemption 2. So, proceed with caution.
Fans can't decide on the saddest gaming death of all time
The immortal question was raised on Reddit, opening the floor to suggestions for the saddest death of all time. The OP suggests Arthur Morgan dying while watching the sunrise, set to D'Angelo's "Unshaken" at the end of Red Dead Redemption 2, should take the top spot.
Still, there were plenty of other options, with the current top comment being Mass Effect 3's Mordin Solus. Saying he was about to retire, the scientific salarian makes a heroic sacrifice at the end of the game. Although he can be saved, we're still moved by his farewell.
Another championed the unexpected death of Aunt May in Marvel's Spider-Man, and someone got behind Brok in God of War Ragnarok, adding, "Knowing what happened between him and Sindri and what his brother did for him it's just heartbreaking."
Shout out to the person who suggested the gut punch of Telltale's The Walking Dead and reminded us, "Why is no one commenting Lee's death From the walking dead season 1?" Another agreed and said, "Because I'm not ready to talk about it yet, still hurts too much!, "while a third added, "That’s the only game I ever played where I bawled my eyes out."
You're missing some big ones
The list is pretty exhaustive, although we feel some other major ones deserve a little more recognition. Even though it was an act of revenge because he struck first, the brutal demise of Joel Miller at the start of The Last of Us Part II will never not be shocking.
In terms of defining deaths, there's also Aerith being stabbed by Sephiroth in Final Fantasy VII. It's arguably the biggest gaming death of all time, but is it too big to be revamped for the upcoming Final Final Fantasy VII Rebirth? Some think Aerith's fate is about to befall another.
Vesemir in The Witcher 3, the jaw-drop of seeing Halo: Reach's Noble Six drop one by one, and even John Marston's bullet-riddled swansong in the OG Red Dead, you writers sure like leaving us as puffy-eyed messes. But, what's your saddest death of all time?
