MW2 Nuke

Black Ops 6 is breaking the mould when it comes to couch play in Call of Duty, as the newest instalment of the series requires that you're plugged in and wired up before you can even fire a bullet.

For the first time, you won't be able to play offline, as the new CoD HQ update will force you to be connected to a WiFi signal. This ends any chance that you'll be able to play the game if disaster strikes and you're cut off.

In that case, you might have thought that other Call of Duty games (such as older campaigns) would be worth keeping around. Well, you'd be wrong again because it seems that recent outages to PlayStation Network and Xbox Live have completely knocked CoD off its mountain.

PSN and Xbox Live outages nuke older Call of Duty games

PlayStation Network and Xbox Live have both thrown a hissy fit over the last week, battling constant interruptions to their retrospective connections and rendering online multiplayer titles moot.

But it seems that thanks to a licence that requires an internet connection to access, the entirety of Call of Duty HQ has been nuked by these outages. As one fan pointed out on X during the PSN outages, the MWII Campaign was inaccessible despite being a "non-online" game mode.

User "Vale" said, "I played the MWII campaign since it's the only non online game I had installed and since it can't constantly verify the license through the internet connection it shuts down the whole game including the single player."

As seen in the tweet, the game will 'suspend' because it can't verify the licence online. "I love modern software licensing!!!" the player added, as another gamer joked, "You will own nothing and you will be happy."

The problem stems from digitally licenced games, which most modern titles have becomes when you remember that discs are becoming archaic. But what's even funnier is that the new PlayStation 5 Pro still won't be able to access your disc versions without an internet connection, as it requires WiFi to link up with the reader.

If you want to play offline games, specifically CoD, you'll have to dust off the old consoles. Then again, at that point, you might as well drag out the DS and GameCubes.
