The Call of Duty universe is poised to change in a big way. Alongside a move into a live-service heavy model, backtracking on the idea we won't get yearly releases, and a plummeting player count, there's also the impending acquisition of Activision Blizzard.
While PlayStation fans have enjoyed many years of getting priority over their Xbox counterparts when it comes to Call of Duty, that's destined to come to an end if Phil Spencer gets his claws on the franchise. As both sides go to war, Sony ponies are begging the gaming giant to look for alternatives.
Could Resistance replace Call of Duty?
Despite complaints it's fallen off in recent years, Call of Duty has continued to be the best-selling franchise year after year, with Modern Warfare 2 pitting Elden Ring to the post to become the best-selling game of 2022. With these impressive credentials, it's no surprise the future of CoD is an important one.
Sony has reportedly rejected Microsoft's offer for 10 years of Call of Duty on PlayStation, with claims Jim Ryan is now simply trying to block the deal. With the deal looking more likely by the day, one ResetEra poll asked what franchise could or should replace Call of Duty.
Given the choice between Guerilla Games' Killzone, Zipper Interactive's SOCOM, and Insomniac's Resistance, there was a clear winner. Nabbing 41.1% of the votes, fans are asking us to back to Resistance. Admittedly, there were only 514 votes, but it's got us feeling nostalgic about the series.
One cheered, "Preferably Resistance since it's at least more than just a military shooter," while another added, "Resistance, I loved that series. Probably my favorite Insomniac series. It's too bad it didn't take off."
Someone else concluded, "I don't know, I kind of feel like they could all stay dead. Each one of them have been done wrong by Sony at some point." Resistance is all well and good, but in terms of spinning out the franchise for yearly release and being a multiplayer you jump into every day, we don't see it.
What is Resistance?
Taking us to an alternate history 1950s in which bug-like aliens have conquered Earth, Resistance picked up Insomniac's acclaimed work on Ratchet & Clank and showed what it could really do before it was making Spider-Man.
The first game came out in 2006 and had the potential to be a massive PlayStation exclusive. It was followed by two sequels in 2008 and 2011, and while Resistance 3 was praised by many as the best in the series, it didn't sell well at all.
Speaking during his Sacred Symbols series back in 2021, Colin Moriarty claimed that Resistance 4 was pitched to Sony but never moved forward due to an influx of apocalyptic games like The Last of Us and Days Gone. This means Insomniac's mystery multiplayer probably isn't a Resistance game.
There's a lot of love for Resistance, and we previously covered how players put it at the top of their list for forgotten franchises that need to come back. That's all well and good, but in terms of filling a potentially ginormous CoD-shaped hole in our lives, pull the other one.
