Handheld gaming is (hopefully) coming back in a big way. Taking your favourite titles on the move has always been a point of contention, and while the likes of the Game Boy have ruled supreme, the Wii U and PlayStation Vita were hardly the hits their gaming overlords were hoping for.

As the Nintendo Switch seemingly has handheld gaming nailed - and the Steam Deck tries to muscle into the market - PlayStation wants a slice of the portable pie. The announcement of the handheld Project Q was a big deal, and if you want to know how much to save, a surprising price reveal could have you sorted.

How much does the Project Q PlayStation handheld cost?

Microsoft is currently duking it out with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) over the potential buyout of Activision Blizzard, with it turning into a buffet of unrevealed information. As well as suggestions The Elder Scrolls 6 is still years away, there's also the stark claim Xbox has 'lost' the console wars.

Of all the reveals, one of the biggest is a potential Project Q price drop. As reported by Axios' Stephen Totilo, the Project Q could come in at under $300/£240, which isn't too bad at all. In fact, it would make PlayStation's latest jaunt into handhelds cheaper than the Nintendo Switch OLED.

Then again, we have to remember this is just what Microsoft maintains, and isn't concrete proof you'll be able to snatch the Project Q for this price. It's also amusing to note the filings refer to it as a portable PlayStation 5, which we actually know isn't the case at all.

What do we know about the Project Q handheld?

Since its announcement at May's PlayStation Showcase, there's been some confusion about what the Project Q actually is. Instead of being its own beast like the ill-fated Vita, Sony's latest dip into handhelds is effectively a spruced-up DualSense controller.

Boasting an 8-inch HD screen and all buttons you'd get from a DualSense, Project Q connects to WiFi and is effectively an advanced version of the PS5's Remote Play feature. it's similar to Logitech's G Cloud, which conveniently also has a $300 price tag.

It remains to be seen whether Project Q can turn Sony's handheld reputation around after the Vita's middling success, but whether we have the next Nintendo Switch or just another Wii U on our hands, it's anyone's guess. If you want to buy the Project Q later in 2023, you'd best start saving now.
