Insomniac Games
Insomniac Games is squeezing back into its spandex for the upcoming Wolverine game, and while we're hoping the developer will continue the success of Marvel's Spider-Man and Miles Morales, we could be in for a disappointing update.
There's been a resurgence in superhero video games since Rocksteady showed us how it's done with the Arkham trilogy, with Insomniac using this as a benchmark for Spider-Man. Wolverine promises to be a more violent affair... if it ever releases.
Has Marvel's Wolverine Been Delayed?
Previously, we wrote about how Wolverine looked poised for a 2023 release because of its mention in the Sony v Microsoft documents submitted to the UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), but all that might've changed.
Going against this, PlayStation LifeStyle notes that a new trailer shows off all the big releases coming this year. Among the big hitters, we see Horizon: Call of the Wild, Forspoken, Final Fantasy XVI, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, and Assassin's Creed Mirage.
Front and centre of the trailer is the upcoming Spider-Man 2, which hopes to follow in God of War Ragnarok's footsteps as a major selling point for PlayStation exclusivity.
We'd also like to point out that Wolverine was never actually confirmed for 2023, meaning everyone has just been going off rumours. At least we know the game is targeting cutting-edge gameplay.
Still, with the game being officially announced in a 2021 PlayStation showcase, we've heard nothing about the superhero showstopper. Back then, Insomniac Head of Franchise Strategy & Studio Relations Ryan Schneider said it was in "very early development."
Why It's Good Wait For Wolverine
We'll admit that releasing Spider-Man 2 AND Wolverine in the same year might be a gamer's dream, but it doesn't make sense financially to put them in direct financial competition with each other.
If we were Insomniac, we'd watch Spider-Man 2 climb to the top of the charts, let the dust settle, and then release Wolverine as one of the PS5's flagship titles in 2024.
This year sees Sony going head-to-head with Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and the likes of Xbox's Starfield, and even though Wolverine would help Sony's numbers, we think the wait is for the best.
Once the marketing madness dies down for Spider-Man 2, Logan will hopefully be popping out his claws and slashing through all the rumours to let us know what's going on with Wolverine.
