Sony's latest push on PlayStation Plus has been controversial... to say the least. In a clear effort to stand up to the mighty Game Pass, the gaming giant has completely revamped PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now in a bid to engage fans with new and old games alike available to download.
There are already worries that despite the amazing hardware tucked away in the PS5, it might struggle on the front of emulation. The problem with emulation often falls to the design of the emulator itself, with some clearly working better than others - and it seems as though PlayStation's latest drive to emulate classic titles is falling short.
What's Wrong With The PlayStation Plus Premium Emulator?
As it turns out, the latest emulation from PlayStation isn't exactly meeting quality standards for the rest of the industry's attempts at bringing classic games to the modern age. The new emulator being used for the PlayStation Plus Premium tier is reportedly struggling to run several title.
According to tests run by Digital Foundry, games aren't playing as poorly as they did on the PlayStation Classic, but it's still not perfect, with games capping out at a meagre 50hz output. Given this premium service is putting a lot of emphasis on the ability to run your favourite games from the '90s and '00s, a lot of players are gravitating toward them once the chance to play them becomes available.
Ape Escape is experiencing some big stutters when it runs at 30fps - rather than the regular 25fps you'd expect - while the games look practically the same when running through the different rendering options available to the classic games. It's a huge shame to see that PlayStation classics aren't getting the love they need. PlayStation Plus could feel more like a chore than a luxury.
Which Classic Games Are Coming To PlayStation Plus?
A wealth of classic games are on their way to PlayStation Plus, but a lot of fans are most looking forward to the titles coming from the PlayStation and PSP.
Those games are:
- Ape Escape
- Hot Shots Golf
- I.Q. Intelligent Qube
- Jumping Flash!
- Mr. Driller
- Super Stardust Portable
- Syphon Filter
- Tekken 2
- Worms Armageddon
- Worms World Party
There's clearly a lot to be excited for when PlayStation Plus' new form comes to our shores, even if it'll be a little stuttery. Here's hoping that the emulator can iron itself out, otherwise fans are going to be peeved.
