The Cronus Zen has been at the heart of many Call of Duty players' frustrations in recent times, but there's finally light at the end of the tunnel as PlayStation appears to have blocked the device.
While playing on console leaves you largely impervious to cheaters - as one pro player found out after making the switch - the Cronus Zen device unfortunately circumvents these restrictions in a rather significant way.
What does the Cronus Zen ban mean for Modern Warfare 3?
The most recent PlayStation Version: 24.01-08.60.00 update has seemingly directly targeted devices like the Cronus Zen that aim to emulate and adapt controller inputs to gain an unfair advantage.
According to Cronus' website, installing the update will mean that the "Zen will no longer connect to the PS5 without disconnecting," rendering the device essentially redundant.
This is extremely good news for anyone playing Modern Warfare 3 - especially in the more competitive modes like Ranked Play - as the Zen was capable of configuring various controller macros and even reducing weapon recoil across the board.
Additionally, much like other devices like the XIM, it was also capable of tricking your console into thinking you were using a controller while giving you the option of using a mouse and keyboard instead for increased accuracy.
These features are cheating in essence, but the desirability of the device was that it was functionally undetectable by both the game and the console on a hardware level.
Cronus does claim that the PlayStation update isn't mandatory, and you can simply skip it and continue to use the Zen as normal - however, this will prevent you from playing online, so it has very much been dealt with in the situations that matter.
Players are already noticing a difference post-Cronus ban
Following on from the most recent PlayStation update, Modern Warfare 3 players are already seeing a significant difference in their performance. Reddit user ahhrealmonsterlol pondered if anyone is "already seeing a difference, or was last night just a lucky one?" in reference to their increased performance.
There is a fair amount of agreement within the thread regarding the enhanced gameplay, with another player remarking that they "got 9 or 10 wins in a row in Ranked" when they've never achieved "more than 2 wins in a row in any mode."
This could very much be either a placebo or coincidence though, but the matter of fact is that players will see an improvement to their games as objectively the Zen isn't able to be exploited anymore.
It is, unfortunately, very much a cat-and-mouse game with these devices, so don't be surprised if Cronus manages to get around the ban in the near future. For now, you can relish in a cheat-free environment.
