A seven-hour prequel to Portal 2 has arrived on Steam, with Second Face Software creating something incredibly special. Better yet, you can play it for absolutely nothing.

Much like too many of Valve's titles, the Portal series reached the number two and threw in the towel. It's easily the worst part of the company's game development (which has been dramatically overtaken by the team's management of Steam).

Sadly, players are coming to expect that there are some games we’ll just never see, from a mainline sequel to Half-Life 2 to a successor to Team Fortress. But, thankfully, fans are willing to step up in order to patch up our hopes for new games - and some of them are truly remarkable.

Fans create entire Portal 2 prequel

Though fans have dedicated a lot of time to developing new Portal puzzles, few have done it in the way that developer team Second Face Software has.

A brand-new prequel to the events of Portal 2 is titled Portal: Revolution and has appeared on Steam. Portal: Revolution packs new characters, mechanics and more.

In this game, you'll play as a test subject for Aperture who awakened by an AI maintenance core, claiming that a monster has destroyed the building, and that it needs your help to repair it.

Portal: Revolution is developed in Strata Source, and a branch of Source Engine that is community-created, it demands that users actually own Portal 2 in order to use it. Still, this makes the title feel like a true love-letter to the game itself.

We've heard a lot about a mythical Portal 3 over the years, but as those years tick on and turn to decades, whispers and writers saying they're "ready" for another outing fail to amount to much. Thankfully, there are plenty of fan projects to keep us busy.

How can I play Portal: Revolution?

Bagging Portal: Revolution itself is actually incredibly simple - it counts officially as a community-made mod (which probably helps to duck out of the view of Valve's cease-and-desist letters). If you own Portal 2, all you need to do is go to Portal: Revolution’s Steam page and install it. Easy.

It's a lovely project that helps to remind of the incredible atmosphere when Portal 2 first launched, and everyone got to experience the greatest puzzler of all time as a collective. God, Valve, please bring the series back. We've asked for more than a decade now.
